- "Moving Towards Eternity," the new EP from flautist
Richard Robbins is a new age album to be certain. Yet it has the
courage to do what so few of its contemporaries seem able to manage; It
defies the limitations of its own genre while still reveling in those
boundaries.
-
- Take for instance "J Walk," the four and a half
minute opening track. Soaring on the wings of Robbins inspired
flute, this instrumental piece evokes images of ancient mystery, while
the backing keyboards and percussion keep it firmly grounded in
contemporary whimsy.
-
- Track two is a rollicking piece titled "Smile from
Your Heart," and while Robbins' flute is still at the core, delicate
vocals are also showcased. Numerous tempo changes punctuate the
piano and guitar, which harkens back to an era of sensitive rock & roll
songsters.
-
- The third and final song is the title track, but it
is much more than that. At eight minutes and thirty one seconds it
is indeed Robbins flagship song. Listeners will find its
multi-genre appeal accessible and the layered vocals melodic. Here
we find Robbins wielding his flute like a paintbrush; spreading thick
layers of sound onto a canvas of organic electronics.
-
- The ultimate test of a new age album is the feelings
that it inspires, and this EP has a rich bounty of emotion.
"Moving Towards Eternity" is aptly titled as it is a journey, and one
well worth undertaking.
